Name: Letizia Leocani, MD, PhD

Title: Director of Neurorehabilitation Unit, Group Leader and Associate Professor of Neurology

Centre: University Hospital San Raffaele, Milan

Clinical and Research Interest:

  • Translational validation of electrophysiological and structural markers of diseases of the central nervous system
  • Treatment strategies using rehabilitation and noninvasive brain stimulation to potentiate the effects of drugs and neurorehabilitation.

Career:

Prof. Leocani is Associate Professor of Neurology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Director of the Neurorehabilitation Unit of the Neurological Dept of the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, where she is also Group Leader of the Experimental Neurophysiology Unit and of Magnetic IntraCerebral Stimulation (MagICS) center - Institute of Experimental Neurology.

After obtaining her MD in Milan, she did a PhD in Human Physiology, followed by a specialization in Neurology. Her clinical and research career at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan is enriched by a Visiting Research Fellow at the Human Motor Control Section of the National Health Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

Letizia’s research and clinical practice focuses on neurorehabilitation and functional recovery in MS and other neurological disorders. In particular, she investigates the translational validation of electrophysiological (advanced EEG analysis, evoked and cognitive potentials, sensor remote monitoring) and structural (optical coherence tomography - OCT) markers of diseases of the central nervous system, and non-invasive neuromodulation approaches.

Letizia published many book chapters and numerous papers in international peer-reviewed journals, also acting as Editorial Board member. She is Co-Chair of the Neurorehabilitation scientific panel of the European Academy of Neurology, former Co-Chair of the Clinical Neurophysiology Panel and Scientific Committee member of the MS Italian Foundation.
